Accelerated Reader

Have you heard of Accelerated Reader ?  It's an exciting reading program that can be used by itself or with the reading program a teacher may already have in place in the classroom.  It allows children to read selections that interest them and then take a computerized test.  The computer gives a test that tells how well the student is comprehending each Accelerated Reader book.

How do you know what reading level your child needs?  How do you know what level of books to check out of the library?  The S.T.A.R. test is a reading test that is given each quarter and it assesses the students reading comprehension, vocabulary, and reading speed.  It gives your child a leveled score and tells you and I your child's reading level.

Accelerated Reader is part of your child's reading curriculum. Your child can pick books that are on the Accelerated Reading list . The speed in which your child reads will depend on you and your child. Each student earns points based on the number of books they read and the difficulty of each book.

For example, your child can look on the computer and find all the Jean Fritz books listed on the Accelerated Reader list. They will pick a book that interests them and read it during our D.E.A.R. time or at home. The list tells the students a book number, title, author, reading level and point value. Example: (book #) 6215 (title) George Washington's Mother (author) Fritz, Jean (grade level) 2.5 (Points possible) 0.5. When he/she finishes reading this book they can take the Accelerated Reader's test and earn the points available.  Here's wishing you lots of good reading this year!
